The Guruvayur Temple, dating back to the 16th century, is dedicated to Lord Krishna, and the idol is said to have been worshipped by Lord Brahma himself at Dwaraka. According to legend, at the start of the current Kali Yuga, Brihaspathi, the guru of the Devas, found a floating idol of Lord Krishna. He along with Vayu, the God of Winds, installed the idol in this temple. Thus the temple, a creation of Guru and Vayu, became known as Guruvayur Temple.

Lord Krishna visited Shiva and Parvathy at their new abode at Mammiyur. And here Lord Krishna declared that worship at Guruvayur will be complete and accomplished only through a simultaneous worship of Shiva at Mammiyur. The temple here has shrines for Vishnu, Karthik and Ganesh.
